Spoils System
It is the year 1818. Andrew Jackson just became president. He has already started off as every other president has, but went more extreme. Almost every president so far has replaced new government officials with ones of their party. The only difference between him and the others is that he dismissed over 200 presidential appointees. I, as one of the critics, accuse him of rewarding Democrats that helped elect him, other than well qualified citizens. Jackson says, "This act will prevent small groups of wealthy men controlling the government." Jackson feels that any job in the government is so "plain and simple" that an ordinary citizen can fill the job perfectly fine. One of his supporters explained the system in a new way, "To the victor belong the spoils." He also explained that spoils are profits or benefits. Now we call the system of rewarding supporters with government jobs the spoils system.
