Nullification Crisis
In the south, anger was in the air everywhere, Especially South Carolina. This anger was brought on by a tariff proposed by President Jackson. This tariff makes southerners, like me, have to pay more for imports from the north. This is unconstitutional in my opinion. In 1832, Congress lowered the rate of the tariff. We the people of South Carolina are still unsatisfied with the tariff. We decided to nullify the tariff, and the Nullification Act passed. We also threatened to secede if we were challenged. President Jackson thought nullification would lead to a civil war. Henry Clay proposed a lower compromise tariff that Jackson publicly supported. Jackson also had Congress pass the force bill, which allowed him to use the army to force the tariff, if necessary. With Jackson's firm stand no other state supported South Carolina. We finally repealed the Nullification Act and the nullification crisis was passed.
